Web design case study - Graduate Jobs Southampton
The Problem
The aim of the Graduate Jobs Southampton project was to build an interactive web portal to work closely with the existing job vacancy function within the careers service (Southampton Solent University and the University of Southampton), so that communication with students, graduates and local companies could be coordinated and improved, not duplicated.
Participating local SMEs register needed to vacancies on the website for FREE and receive advice on recruitment and on-going staff development. Students and graduates needed to register their details on the site so they could receive email alerts about relevant jobs.

The Solution
We implemented an interactive web portal which allowed graduates and employers to achieve a variety of tasks. Graduates and students were able to register with the website and outline their skills and interests. Using this information our matching system was able to recommend relevant jobs to graduates which matched their profile. They were then able to apply for the jobs as well as uploading tailored CVs and covering letters.
Employers were able to add and edit jobs, once they logged in. Additionally employers were able to view graduate information about those who have applied for their jobs. This saves the employer time and acts as a powerful tool during the recruitment process.
Admin users have control over almost every part of the website, from the content added to the website using our content management system, through to all employer and graduate details. In addition to this, full statistical information is available to analyse the activity and performance of the website, which is necessary to meet funding guidelines. Enewsletters are also used as a communication tool to inform users of events, updates or relevant news pieces.
How We Achieved It
- Easy to use Content Management System (CMS) to update the website
- Web design to build an online image for the project
- Development of bespoke systems to manage and analyse all information in the website
The Benefits
The project has been a great success and has received praise from all stakeholders. The key benefits and successes of the project thus far are as follows (as at October 2007);
- Over forty graduates placed in jobs in the Southampton area
- Over 250 employers registered and approved on the website
- Over 310 graduates registered with the website
- Over 60,000 job searches carried out
- Statistics on all aspects of the website at the click of a button
- Able to track all job searches carried out to identify ways to improve the website
What They Said
“So far the website has been a great success. Previously our jobs revolved around paperwork and telephone calls but now we have our web portal and it has made our lives so much easier! It gives me great pleasure knowing that we are helping students and graduates find jobs and making the long, hard and sometimes stressful process an easier one.”
Meredith Pollock, Project Co-ordinator, Southampton Solent University
